Modernizing Training Resources for the U.S. Army TRADOC
As a web developer with a passion for building purposeful and user-focused digital experiences, I had the opportunity to contribute to a series of web pages for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). These pages form part of TRADOC’s Training Portal, a centralized hub for modern training initiatives aimed at developing agile, informed, and data-literate Army professionals.
Development Process
Building these TRADOC pages was a multi-phase effort that reflected real-world software development workflows and required attention to detail at every step:
Planning & Requirements Gathering
- Collaborated with Army civilian staff, instructional designers, and subject-matter experts to identify goals, audiences, and key messaging for each page.
- Developed user personas to ensure the design met the needs of both entry-level learners and senior leadership.
- Created a site map and content wireframes to define page flow and structure.
Design & Graphics
- Designed mockups using Adobe XD and Figma based on TRADOC’s brand and Army style guide.
- Developed custom icons and banner graphics to visually support learning themes like knowledge management and data literacy.
- Ensured all visuals met accessibility contrast and labeling standards.
Front-End Development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
- Built mobile-responsive layouts using HTML5 and CSS3 with modular, maintainable code.
- Implemented responsive design principles to ensure all pages render effectively on both desktop and mobile devices.
- Used JavaScript for interactive elements such as expandable FAQ sections and navigation controls.
- Incorporated semantic markup to boost SEO and screen reader accessibility.
Accessibility & Compliance
- Verified all pages met Section 508 standards using tools like WAVE and manual keyboard testing.
- Integrated ARIA attributes and ensured proper focus management for assistive technology compatibility.
User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
- Conducted iterative testing with internal stakeholders and Army reviewers.
- Gathered feedback and implemented changes related to layout, terminology clarity, and user flow.
- Logged and tracked issues through a shared QA tracker to ensure no detail was overlooked.
Security & Approval
- Worked within a government staging environment and followed DoD approval workflows.
- Reviewed code for security vulnerabilities and ensured HTTPS enforcement, secure assets, and proper content sanitization.
Deployment to Production
- Coordinated with Army IT teams for publishing the final approved pages to the live TRADOC site.
- Verified proper function and visual integrity post-deployment across browsers and devices.
- Documented the process and delivered handoff materials for future updates or training.
Key Contributions
- Led front-end development using semantic HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to ensure cross-browser and cross-device compatibility.
- Implemented responsive design so pages render cleanly on both desktop and mobile platforms.
- Built accessible user interfaces conforming to Section 508 and WCAG standards.
- Collaborated with stakeholders, designers, and Army training specialists to translate goals into effective UI and content structures.
- Ensured technical accuracy, security compliance, and successful deployment through testing and coordination with Army IT.
- Optimized site performance by compressing assets, reducing load times, and minimizing code bloat.
- Structured content to support both visual clarity and SEO discoverability.
Skills Demonstrated
- Full Lifecycle Web Development from planning to deployment
- Clear Communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Security and Accessibility Awareness, critical in any enterprise or government environment
- Scalable Design Thinking to ensure longevity and flexibility in content updates
Why This Matters
